Children decide what is valuable. An acorn, a smooth stone, a piece of glass worn down by water — none of them worth anything, all of them treasure. The value is not in the object. It is assigned, completely and without hesitation, by whoever picked it up.

I collected acorns the way I collected chestnuts: quickly, in autumn, in pockets that were always too full by the time I came home.

This is how memory works as well. What we keep is rarely what mattered most from the outside. It is what someone once looked at and decided to carry.
